Healthy Sundae Topping Ideas

May 28, 2015

Have I mentioned my food truck idea? (No takesies!) It’s called Sun Daze and sells sundaes every day but Sunday. It stems pretty strongly from the fact that I want to put EVERYTHING on my sundaes. When I was in college and lived in the dorms, there would be hand dipped ice cream every couple of weeks. On those nights, it would take me so long to top my sundae that by the time I sat down to eat it, it was half melted. Woopsies.

At home, I’m A. just a little too lazy to prep all those toppings B. trying to hold myself to a higher standard that doesn’t doesn’t involve eating a whole jar of marshmallow fluff. Occasionally, we’ll pick up some low fat ice cream or even vegan ice cream (coconut milk ice cream? *drool*) but often I’ll pull a couple of bananas out of the freezer and make nice cream — just toss the bananas in and blend until creamy. Maybe a splash of vanilla extract if we’re feeling fancy. Easy peasy. Then we go for whatever healthier toppings we have on hand.

In general, you can’t go wrong with basically any fruit cut up, a drizzle of nut butter, and/or some almonds. To really kick it up a notch, we used Blue Diamond Dark Chocolate Almonds. These almonds are already SO tasty, but as the ice cream melts they create little chocolate rivers around themselves. Tastiest river ever, thank you. Josh and I have both settled into our ice cream favorites, lately. And no surprise, they both include a couple of those tasty almonds.

Her fruity chocolate ice cream:

  • Sliced strawberries
  • Toasted coconut chips
  • Dark chocolate almonds

His chocolate peanut butter ice cream:

  • Melty peanut butter (put a scoop of PB in a microwave safe bowl, microwave in 10 second increments until liquidy)
  • A drizzle of agave nectar or honey (great alternative for caramel!)
  • Dark chocolate almonds (he wouldn’t turn away cinnamon almonds, either!)

Honorable mentions:

  • Dash of cinnamon and nutmeg
  • Fresh cherries
  • Chopped apples microwaved until soft (with a little cinnamon, obviously)
  • Sea salt almonds
  • Whole wheat pretzels
  • Dark chocolate chips

What are your favorite sundae toppings? Summer is barely on the way and I know this craving for ice cream isn’t going away any time soon!

This was post was sponsored by Blue Diamond Almonds and I was sent free product for the purposes of review. I wasn’t compensated in any other way and all opinions are my own.
