Smokey Hummus – Recipe Redux

January 21, 2015

First up – don’t forget to enter the giveaways for a copy of Dairy Made Easy and a $40 gift card for Evolution Fresh juices (redeemable at Starbucks and a bunch of other places). I’m excited to give two people a reason to smile because I’ve had a rough couple of days on top of having a rough last week. My computer decided it didn’t want to be a computer on Sunday and took a lot of coaxing to come back around on top of some hectic/stressful time at work. Needless to say, I need some good news and I’ll settle for passing on some good news instead.

This month’s Recipe Redux theme is smokey foods, which is kind of good news because I LOVE smokey flavor. I put liquid smoke in almost everything I make and I love a sprinkle of smoked paprika, plus I burn my food purposefully all the time. It’s been a ridiculously long time since I made homemade hummus (liiiiike 2010 at my parent’s house before leaving on a Spring break trip) and I’ve been on a hummus kick lately, so I figured I was long over due.

The smoked paprika adds the perfect amount of smokiness and a touch of cumin helps round it out. It tastes kind of like if hummus and baba ganoush had a baby (minus the eggplant) with a delicious punch you can’t find in store bought hummus. It’s great on pita chips, obvs, but really made carrot sing. The slight sweetness of carrots + full flavored smokey hummus = a winning combo. I just picked up some celery tonight, too, and I know that’ll be amazing.

Prep time:
Total time:

Ingredients
  • 1½ c cooked chickpeas (15 oz can, drained and rinsed)
  • ¼ c tahini
  • ¼ – ½ tsp salt, to taste
  • 2 garlic cloves (can be whole, but remove the papery bits)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ c + 1 tbsp water
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika plus extra
  • ¼ tsp dried cumin
  • Couple of dashes of hot sauce (optional)

Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Blend until your desired consistency is reached, adding more water if necessary. Mine took a solid 5 or more minutes of processing to reach my preferred consistency, but it’ll vary based on the power of your processor.
  2. Sprinkle with extra smoked paprika for serving.

Yum! I love hummus but I haven’t made my own in far too long. I definitely need to get back into making it! this recipe looks awesome, Kelly 🙂

I am seriously addicted to hummus at the moment. I think a little paprika goes a long way in it. The same with some roasted garlic.

Awesome recipe, Kelly! I definitely need to start making my own homemade hummus more often. I hope things straighten out with your computer and work gets a little less busy for you!
