Udi’s Gluten Free Review + [CLOSED]Giveaway!

July 24, 2013

**This giveaway is closed and the winner has been notified**

I know I’ve been teasing you guys for weeks with this giveaway, but it’s finally time! Udi‘s sent over a HUGE box of gluten free goodies, and I’ve been working my way through them.  You’ve been seeing some of the stuff pop up on the blog with new recipes, like the gluten free lasagna pizza or yesterday’s vegan beef and avocado quesadillas.

gf-pizza3

I also made one of my older recipes, sweet and savory lentil joes.

Lentil Sloppy Joes

And devoured many just plain in my hand, like these coconut peanut butter cookies.  I’ve tried probably 5 times now to recreate these cookies and I can’t even come close – they’re that good!

Peanut Butter Coconut Cookie

While I do not stick to a gluten free diet, my sister does and I have many friends that do, as well.  I always try to be conscious of other people’s dietary restrictions because I have restrictions of my own, so I often find myself buying gluten free products or making gluten free recipes.  I was SO excited to try everything Udi’s sent me to I can give you all some perspective on the GF options available at the store.

I’ll start with my favorites.  I already mentioned the peanut butter cookies (which I would seriously give a 10/10, no way to improve on that!), but other standouts for me were the pizza crusts, millet-chia bread, and the harvest crunch muffins.  The pizza crusts were one of the best packaged thin crusts I’ve ever tried, gluten free or not.  I feel pretty similarly about the millet-chia bread.  Though the slices are on the small side, a serving size is 2 pieces for about the same amount of calories as a large whole-grain slice of bread – I just took that as an indicator I should always have two sandwiches.  The harvest crunch muffins had a great flavor, but the amazing part for me was the texture.  They were so fluffy and the epitome of what a muffin should be for me.  A++.  Just realized I forgot the granola!  The vanilla granola is another superstar in Udi’s lineup.  While I think most granolas are gluten free, this one is definitely worth checking out whether your GF or not.  Great crunch, nice vanilla flavor, and it stayed crunchy in my yogurt 🙂

Millet-Chia Bread

Millet-chia bread in action

Not all could be my favorites, but I wanted to talk about as many of the products they sent me as possible! Here’s a quick rundown of everything else.
Other breads: I also tried cinnamon raisin  and omega flax and fiber bread.  Both breads were good, I just really liked the millet-chia.
Bagels: The mighty bagels and cinnamon raisin bagels tasted really good but I thought they had a slightly more bready texture than the standard bagel.  Not bothersome, I just like my bagels a little harder on the outside.
Chips: I was sort of on the fence over the sea salt ancient grain chips.  Josh really liked them, but they had a vague background taste I couldn’t quite place.  Not bad, but I don’t think I would buy this flavor – I didn’t try the Jalapeno Cheddar, but I bet that one is great!
Granola bars: I was NOT a fan of the chocolate chip granola bars. The bars were soft and hard at the same time, there was just not a good balance.  I gave the rest to my GF sister and I haven’t heard back from her… so I don’t think she liked them either.  Can’t all be winners, I guess.
Tortillas:  I tried both the large and small tortillas, and I wasn’t sold on either.  If you just ate a room temperature tortilla, they were kind of gritty.  I grilled them up into quesadillas with some olive oil and the texture got WAY better, but the flavor changed slightly.  They were too crumbly to roll into enchiladas or flautas.  Unless you are GF and REALLY miss flour tortillas, I think you might be better off with corn tortillas.
Buns:  The classic hamburger buns were GREAT for sloppy joes.  They held up very well and didn’t fall apart, like can happen with even regular buns with a sloppy sauce.  I recommend using these in extra saucy situations or adding extra condiments to burgers, because the buns really soaked up sauce (in the most delicious way!).

Now for the giveaway!  Open to US residents only (sorry!).  Please also note that most of Udi’s foods are not vegan, so if you stick to a strict vegan diet you may not want to enter unless you have someone in mind you’d like to give some of the items to.   Winners will get 3 of my favorites + get to pick 3 items they’d like to try.

My cousin (36 years old), her daughter (7 years old), my aunt (59 years old), and myself (25 years old), have all been diagnosed with Celiac Disease spanning over the past two years. We have all tried to a variety of gluten free food products and share our ideas/reviews, and we all agree Udi’s has the best selection and taste of gf products. If I won this contest, I would have a mini gluten-free party for all of us to try and share all of the wonderful products. Keeping my toes and fingers crossed! 🙂

    Monique Hjalmquist Jul 30, 2013

I have been gluten free since just this past February. I have been trying different products and like Udi’s the best so far. I have lived with migraines and rashes from wheat not knowing the cause. GF is costly and I would love to be able to try more of the Udi products.

      Kelly Jul 30, 2013

Josh has been having terrible migraines for a while now — it’s interesting to see that wheat or gluten could be the cause! We don’t typically keep gluten free (I have no issues with it, and Josh has had no known issue) but we’re staring a GF week, hope it helps him like it did you!

    Meg Jul 30, 2013

I think Udi’s does some really good stuff. Their pizza crust is my favorite so far, though I’ve yet to find something that wasn’t better than the other gluten free stuff out there.

    Jeri Jul 28, 2013

I’ve gone gluten-free for a few reasons, but most amazing is that I am no longer in whole-body pain! I’m unemployed, so it’s a bit tough to afford Udi’s products, but I have treated myself to a few and would love to try more! I wish Udi’s was around when my son was gluten free. It was so hard to find palatable, let alone delicious products back then.

    Denise Jul 28, 2013

A friend’s kid has celiac disease. I’d give this to her if I won.

    greg rowland Jul 27, 2013

    carolynmcginnis Jul 27, 2013

I love Udi’s products and buy them regularly. You can’t beat their bread and buns for tasting great and being gluten free. I just wish I could purchase them fresh instead of frozen.

    Heather Freeman Jul 27, 2013

I would like to try it for the bread alone, it looks so good! I don’t think I have a gluten allergy to my knowledge, but people tell me you just feel better when you cut it from your diet.

Kellie Rose Wilson Jul 27, 2013

I have trouble finding new gluten free foods to try where I live

    Dina Jul 25, 2013

I was just diagnosed with a gluten intolerance but haven’t indulged in Udi’s yet. This list is super helpful as I make my grocery list! Can’t wait to try the bagels.

      Kelly Jul 25, 2013

Glad it helped! There are some easy GF baked goods around the blog, too. If you haven’t ventured into GF baking yet, I typically use easy to find flours and no strange leaveners.

    Craig H. Jul 25, 2013

It’s hard to find good gluten free items in my smaller town, but luckily Udi’s hit the shelves about 6-8 months ago. I still hate paying the gluten tax, but have been really happy with all the Udi’s products I have tried.

    Nathaniel Jul 25, 2013

My fiancee is allergic to gluten so I’m always trying new recipes and products to surprise her. I know that Udi’s is her favorite bread (I’ve bought her other ones but she always says Udi’s is best) but I’m not sure what else she’s tried. If she likes something, the local Food CO-OP is good about ordering things. Thank you for bringing new products to my attention. The local stores don’t always pick up the latest products (Which can be good, we hate when a favorite is replaced by something new that we don’t like as much).

    Kate Jul 25, 2013

Udi’s pizza crusts are amazing. I haven’t tried the millet-chia bread, either, but it looks like it would make some good sandwiches.

    Emily Jul 25, 2013

Being a college kid, I don’t have time to make as much food as I do at home. Udi’s really helps to make sticking to gluten free a little easier!

    Natalie yeoman Jul 25, 2013

I can only eat gluten free foods cuz I have stomach problems

    Erica Scott Jul 25, 2013

Love the pizza crusts – the BF and I sometimes cut them up and use them as pita triangles with hummus or other spreads too. Haven’t tried the millet-chia bread, but I’d love to.

      Kelly Jul 25, 2013

That sounds like such a good idea! Baked with some garlic and a little EVOO, they would make perfect chips for hummus.

    Bonnie Jul 25, 2013

The millet-chia bread is my favorite! Is the pizza crust similar to flatbread? I’ve been craving flatbread so much but the pizza crusts I’ve tried from other brands are super thick and chewy which is not what I want.

      Kelly Jul 25, 2013

This is a thin crust and it has a little bit of a chew to it if you cook it right from frozen. The first time I used it, I thawed it out completely to room temperature and was a lot better that time. I’m not sure I would say it’s very similar to flat bread, but I haven’t had many flatbread pizzas to compare

    Joanne Jul 25, 2013

I’m so glad to know there are actually gluten-free products that taste good!! Definitely going to check out Udi’s!

    Wehaf Jul 25, 2013

I recently went gluten-free and I am still learning about what is out there.

    Monisha Jul 24, 2013

I am the only one inmy family who has to eat Gluten free and lot of the time.I Feel guilty paying so much for Gluten free goodies for myself! Would love to try these new Gluten free goodies from Udis!

    David Ressler Jul 24, 2013

Until this blog post, I didn’t even know Udi’s had other products besides gluten free bread! I would love to win this giveaway and share these yummy looking products with my dad and my younger sister (who also have celiac).

    Katie B Jul 24, 2013

I have been gluten free for 10 years and Udi’s is the first brand that makes me feel like I am normal when I eat again! I would love to win!

      Kelly Jul 24, 2013

      Wow, 10 years!

    Lynn Hendricks Jul 24, 2013

My long term boyfriend recently found out he is allergic to gluten and we are trying to find new great foods for us to eat! (I try to stick to a gluten free diet as well to make it easier for him) and we have only tried bread and buns from Udi’s because that’s all our local store sells of the brand! But I would love to win so we can try even more!

    Bill Jul 24, 2013

I am struggling to find Udis in the area I just moved to and would love to try some products out before a take a long drive to Whole Foods.

      Kelly Jul 24, 2013

Do you have any local health stores you can try? I live in a fairly small town and our little health store has a great variety.

    Rob Starobin Jul 24, 2013

Their ancient grain granola bars were pretty good; I haven’t tried the chocolate chip ones to compare.

      Kelly Jul 24, 2013

I read the description of the ancient grain bars and they look like something I’d enjoy! I haven’t tried them yet though

    Em @ Love A Latte Jul 24, 2013

My nephew sticks to a gluten free diet and loves Udi’s products! Great giveaway! What products are vegan? Thanks! 🙂

      Kelly Jul 24, 2013

All of the products I looked at had the warning that they’re processed on the same equipment as milk and eggs so if you’re very strict, I’m not sure any are. If the possibility of cross contamination doesn’t bother you, there are few seemingly vegan options. With a quick look, I could only be sure the sea salt chips were safe. The granola and granola bars all contain honey and the bread products use egg.

    SandyN Jul 24, 2013

I JUST saw Udi’s products yesterday for the first time. I was going to try them, but passed them for another brand. I’d love to win this price and check them out!!
