Ten Minute TVP Tacos

June 10, 2013

Have you entered the Bob’s Red Mill giveaway yet?  If not, don’t worry – I’ve included the Rafflecopter below.  Don’t forget you can tweet about the giveaway everyday for an additional entry!  On Friday, I reviewed the hazelnut flour and today I have textured vegetable protein.  It’s a little unfair to review something I already know I love, but I feel like TVP tends to get a bad reputation and I wanted to tell you all how great it can be.

As far as meat substitutes go, this one is the most versatile.  Beans and lentils will always taste like beans and lentils, but TVP tastes like whatever you want it to.  You can hydrate it in vegetable, no-beef, or no-chicken broth and have a great meat-substitute in minutes.  I know lots of families also add it to ground beef or chicken to extend it cheaply – TVP is very budget friendly!  Just make sure you hydrate it in a flavorful broth, or it’s going to be pretty bland.  The texture is great and omnivore-Josh has given this his stamp of approval, which is VERY rare for a meat-substitute.

These tacos are my absolute favorite taco in the world, which really says a lot when you’re a taco fanatic like me.  Best part? These tacos come together in less than ten minutes!  They’re pretty minimally topped in the pictures, but I love to load mine up with vegan cheese sauce, taco sauce, sour cream, and a super ton of lettuce.  I’m curious if anyone else has ever tried TVP and what their favorite uses are – let me know in the comments!

Mexican Cabbage Soup Apr 16, 2014

[…] Another bonus about this soup? You open a few cans, sprinkle some seasonings, chop like two things, and walk away. Just make sure you come back to dinner in a few hours and enjoy. Also, toppings. Because cabbage as like 4 calories, you can cover this baby in sour cream or cheese without a second though. For bonus points: cut a corn tortilla into strips, spritz with nonstick spray, shake on some taco seasoning, and put under the broiler until crispy — put those crunchy bits on your soup and slip into heaven. Serve alongside a salad for a light dinner or serve as an appetizer for tacos or burritos! I’ll suggest 10 minute TVP tacos. […]

I have always been chicken to try TVP. You have sold me! Adding it to my grocery list although I don’t remember seeing it there. I’ll have to look harder. Bobs Red Mill products rock!

At my grocery store, TVP tends to wander between the gluten free section and the baking section. I normally find it next to the Bob’s Red Mill flours and baking aids. Until I was actively looking for it, I assumed it would be hard to find but I’ve seen it at every grocery store I’ve gone to since.

I have never heard of TVP before but it sounds interesting and looks almost exactly like ground beef. I’m intrigued!

It’s SOOOO cheap and even more tasty. You should definitely try it out while you’re trying to phase out meat.

I never knew that’s what TVP was! Very cool! I remember in The Netherlands they had a great ground meat substitute (I was a veg then) and I could never find it in America, or one that was as good. I’ll have to try this out for a meatless monday thing 🙂

Do you remember what it was called? I’m always looking for meat substitutes and swaps!

Until this post I had no idea that TVP existed. I always bought frozen versions of it but this is so user friendly for people who love to experiment in the kitchen. I’ll be looking for this this weekend 🙂

      Kelly Jun 11, 2013

These are smaller pieces than the frozen versions (if you’re thinking like boca or morningstar farms crumbles?) and there are far fewer inredients. Those have a long list, this has just one! I used to buy the frozen stuff too, but now I’m pretty exclusive with Bob’s TVP. It’s wonderful and I’m glad I could introduce you to it– I want to know all the recipes you try with it!

I’m SOOO in the mood for tacos now!!

    Christine @ 24 Carrot Kitchen Jun 10, 2013

I have not used TVP and did not know it existed (in a bag from Bob’s). I love tacos and would love to try this recipe!

    Em @ Love A Latte Jun 10, 2013

Oh I love tacos so much! Definitely have them on the menu this week. I wonder if my husband would like this too!

      Kelly Jun 10, 2013

I seriously think he would! Use the no-beef broth concentrate you won a few weeks ago and they’re pretty perfect 🙂

    cleaneatingveggiegirl Jun 10, 2013

It is absolutely amazing how much this looks like meat! I think you could definitely fake some meat-eaters out with this one! 😉

      Kelly Jun 10, 2013

Josh has given this his omni-stamp of approval, which means SO much! We seriously eat this once a week in our house. Inexpensive and so delicious.
